Resumen:
A porous silica-based material with living cells lodging macro-cavities has been prepared in monolithic form through a novel three-step process which involves cells immobilization in calcium alginate, sol-gel synthesis of the inorganic matrix at biocompatible conditions and removal of alginate polymer to allow cell division and growth.
