Resumen:
In order to advance studies of obsidian recovered from archaeological sites in central Argentina and central Chile, geological samples from the major obsidian source areas in the south-central Andes have been collected and analyzed. Both XRF and NAA have been employed to determine the chemical compositions and to identify combinations of elements useful for differentiating between the individual sources and subsources of obsidian. Provenance studies are now becoming more successful throughout the region.
