Resumen:
Within a chapter analyzing the endocrine system, the pineal gland is described as a structure that establishes a clear link with another organic system: the circadian system. The anatomy and physiology of the circadian system as well as of this atypical endocrine gland are described. The pineal´s  main product, melatonin, it´s characteristics, the diverse roles of this hormone and possible applications are examined. The scientific basic facts, some historical events associated with the development of the subject plus a few practical possibilities are covered.
