INTRODUCTION PURPOSE OF THE TRIP This field trip was arranged with the aim of showing different ichnological localities from central Patagonia, the region where the First International Congress on Ichnology (Ichnia 2004) will be held. We intend to visit both continental and marine successions displaying invertebrate and vertebrate ichnofossils. ð“is selection of accessible localities reflects our personal experience and relatively ghorthtravel distances. Many aspects of these localities are still under study because we are at present conducting active research activities in them. Patagonia is a vast region and this act is reflected in the distance that we will need to travel during trip, which is about 1,800 km. In order to make your participation more comfortable, we will return every day to the largest city of the area: Comodoro Rivadavia. This will increase slightly the amount of kilometers to be traveled, but will simplify many other aspects. ð“is introductory chapter contains a detailed itinerary (see also Fig. 1) with approximate distances, departure and arrival times. It also includes a summary on the geology of central Patagonia, with emphasis on the Jurassic to Neogene interval, to which belong the units to be visited. Please, remember that collecting fossil material is not allowed at any stop, the flora and fauna is also protected.
