Resumen:
The vapor-phase oligomerization of acetone was studied over MgO and MgO promoted with alkali (Li, Na, K, Cs) or alkaline earth (Ca, Sr, Ba) metal ions.  Basicity of MgO increased upon promotion following the order of the electrodonating ability of the promoter oxide.  Oligomerization of acetone on MgO-based catalysts gave almost 100% selectivity toward a,b-unsaturated ketones, mainly mesityl oxide, isomesityl oxide and isophorone.  Surface promotion with alkali or alkaline earth metals improved catalyst activity. In particular, addition of Li+ caused a structural promotion that enhanced selectivity toward isophorone.
