Resumen:
There are no accurate data about the prevalence of diabetes in inhabitants of the highlands, particularly in Argentina. The population of Jujuy is distributed into four geographic regions: Yunga, 500 meters above sea level (MASL), Valle, 1200 MASL, Quebrada, 2500 MASLand Puna, above 3500 MASL, a situation that might favor the appearance of environmental factors that could affect diabetes. The purpose of this work was to explore the metabolic profi le of diabetic patients inhabiting environments at different altitudes in Jujuy. Thestudy was carried out in 1317 patients grouped into Valle n=607, Yungas n=513, Quebrada n=92 and Puna n=105. Body mass index, monthly insulin dose (MID), fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides were determined. Patients were also surveyed about their nutritional habits and knowledge of diabetes. ANOVA was performed and means comparison test with a signifi cance level of p<0.01. Patients from the Puna exhibited higher HbA1c, required more MID, had higher LDL and HDL cholesterol levels and showed greater need for nutritional counseling and diabetes education compared to other regions. Although it is necessary to improve nutritional counseling and diabetes education in this region, the results strengthen the hypothesis of an effect of altitude on diabetes in Jujuy.
