Resumen:
In this chapter a general introduction to biofuels (including biodiesel as a liquid fuel) is presented. The necessity to develop renewable fuels as an alternative to fossil resources stems from the very serious challenges associated to global climate changes and also from the pressing need to diversify the energy-supply matrix, particularly in oil-dependent countries. In order to present the reader with a clearer view of the role of biodiesel in the context of present-day global econo-my, a summary of the evolution of biodiesel production in the last years (2002 2008) is presented. This includes data from the European Union (the first producer and consumer of this biofuel in the world) and other leading producers.
