Resumen:
In recent decades, vector control has become a worldwide challenge due to the nuisance and risks to human health that these vector-borne diseases imply. They are highly associated with urbanization, the movement of people, climate change, and resistance to the use of traditional synthetic insecticides, and the evolution of strains of pathogens and others. The World Health Organization recommends and emphasizes the control of these vectors, through various methods. In this symposium, different strategies will be discussed both in experimental and real scenarios. In all these cases there are advantages and disadvantages. Some are in experimental stages as knockout insects for target genes, other technologies are available as sterile insect release (both biological sterility through symbiotic bacteria and chemical sterility), physical (breeding sites removal) and biological methods (Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis and copepods), that could be part of a Management program to achieve its integration into the vector control strategy, in order to create a sustainable and profitable control. Finally, the perspectives and advantages for the control of vector-borne diseases in the Americas as part of the Regional Program of Entomology in Public Health and Vector Control of the Pan American Health Organization will be discussed.
