Resumen:
Analysis of the research conducted to date on protozoan pathogens of insects make it clear that few of them can currently be considered a good candidate for use in integrated management control programs around the world. The two main reasons for this assessment are that most of the protozoan discovered so far produce chronic infections, and there is no readily available method for mass production spores for field release. in many other fields of research in Latin America, study of protozoan pathogenic to insects is handicapped by a lack of sufficient funds and well trained personnel working in this potentially important area. Significant advances will be few and far between until greater efforts are made. More researchers and research is needed on entomopathogenic protozoa. Some of the important research and development needs for the use of protozoa as bioinsecticides in Latin American countries include: extensive exploratory work to find new entomopathogenic protozoa; establishing and maintaining a repository of viable protozoa; developing technology for mass production and storage and improving technology for increased field persistence and dispersal.
