Resumen:
The early dispersion of maize (Zea mays) in central Argentina (c 3000-2500 BP), in a fully hunter-gatherer context without effective implementation of agriculture, is analyzed. Two archaeological sites with this chronology, and evidences of manipulation, processing, and consumption of maize, without practices of food production, are presented (diverse cultural changes including agriculture are registered in more recent times).  This local case is integrated in the broader contemporary macro regional context of southern South America, in order to analyze and discuss the historical trajectories of hunter-gatherer societies, the dispersion of cultigens including maize, and the mechanisms involved in the agricultural frontier expansion.
