Resumen:
In this article we present the results of different lines of research that enabled us to outline the social and environmental process of Western Tinogasta throughout the 1st to 13th centuries A.D. (including production, distribution and use of ceramic and lithic objects; visual languages; organization of space; consumption of animal and vegetal resources; food production; paleoenvironmental studies; among other approaches). The regional process is characterized by the repetition of certain practices by societies of the first millennium A.D., which remarkably continued in time beyond the boundaries set by the current periodization for Northwest Argentina. The highlands and lowlands of this region were occupied and inhabited contemporarily by these populations, in continuous, sporadic and/or alternate manners, partially depending on the periods of environmental instability that affected the region. Therefore, the settlement process was neither lineal nor characterized by continuities. On the contrary, it presented intraregional modalities that resulted from particular contexts of appropriation and construction of these spaces.
