Resumen:
While there are many advantages to diversifying the participants in research studies, and including more minoritized groups such as Latinxs, there are many challenges to accomplishing this task (Garcia-Huidobro et al., 2019; George et al., 2014). In this workshop, we seek to share the multiple strategies and approaches we have pursued across diverse projects, highlighting what has and has not worked for us in studies taking place at home and in school contexts within the U.S. and abroad. This includes adapting strategies and approaches for different steps of the research process; from recruiting and retaining Latinx participants, to tailoring data collection measures to Latinxs. Evidence of the effectiveness of our work includes the retention of 88% of participants across most sessions of one research project. Additionally, in other projects, we found powerful (for researchers) and transformative (for participants) tools: acknowledging participants as active thinkers and building on their strengths.
