Resumen:
Oue goal in this paper is to summarize the broad picture of Northwest argentina, while noting that our information is drawn from an uneven and probably not fully representative cross-section of evidence. The Inkas seem to have reorganized the south of the Empire following policies like those applied in the north but at a scale proportionate to the region: that is, appreciably less extensive than in Peru, but equally significant for the region´s people. Tha apparent modesty of the Inka presence is thus a product both of realty and of the way in which information has been accrued and assessed.
