Resumen:
This studycomparedrumendevelopmentandbloodmetaboliteconcentrationsofCriollo kids undertwodifferentrearingsystems.Fortygoatkidswererearedbytheirdams, suckling goatmilkfrombirthuntilweaningat45(TR,traditionalrearingsystem, n¼20) or 30daysofage(AR,alternativerearingsystem, n¼20). GoatkidsintheARgroupwere offered asolidstarterdietadlibitumfrombirthuntil45daysofageandagrowingdiet (80% alfalfahayand20%groundcorn)from30to90daysofage.TheTRgroupwasfeda growingdiet(withoutstarterdiet)between30and90daysofage.Bloodsampleswere analyzed forserumconcentrationofglucose,totalprotein,bloodureanitrogen(BUN), obeta4-hydroxybutyrate(obeta4HB), andnon-esterifiedfattyacids(NEFA).Fivekids from eachgroupwereslaughteredat21,45,70and90daysofagetodeterminerumen variables.ARkidsconsumed32.7%lessgoatmilkthanTRkidsthroughoutthetrial.Body weight ofARkidsat45?60 daysofagewaslowerthanthetraditionalmarketweight. Rumen weight(as%ofbodyweight)washigher(Po0.01)inARkidsthaninTRkidsat21 and 45daysofage.Furthermore,rumenweight(as%ofweightofallcompartments)was higher inARkidscomparedtoTRkidsat21,45and70daysofage.RumenpapillaeofAR kids tended(Po0.10)tobelongerthanthoseofTRkidsat21and45daysofage.Blood glucose concentrationdecreasedwithincreasingageofkids,indicatingashiftfrom glucose toshort-chainfattyacidsasprimaryenergysource.Serum obeta4HB andBUN concentrationsat30and45daysofagewerehigher(Po0.05)inARkidsthaninTRkids. The higherserumconcentrationsofBUNand obeta4HB wereattributedtoearly development ofrumenmicrobialfermentationactivityandtogreatermetabolicdevel- opmentoftherumenepitheliumofARkidscomparedtoTRkids.Inconclusion,the alternativerearingsystemimprovesthephysicalandmetabolicdevelopmentofthe rumenandpromotesthetransitionofkidsfrompre-ruminanttoruminant.Indryperiods with shortageofforage,thealternativerearingsystemcouldbeused,butthesegoatkids should berearedabovethetraditionalagetoenablethemtoachieveanappropriate weight formarketing. n¼20) or 30daysofage(AR,alternativerearingsystem, n¼20).
