Resumen:
This work aims to compare the mortality attributable to overweight/obesity in Argentina and Chile at the end of the first decade of 2000. Secondary data sources were used: the National Survey of Risk Factors (ENFR 2009) in Argentina and the 2009-2010 National Health Survey (ENS in Chile) and vital statistics. To estimate mortality attributable to overweight and obesity, we used the prevalence-dependent method, based on the calculation of the Population Attributable Fraction (PAF). To determine the level of mortality, the Years of Life Expectancy Lost (YLEL) were calculated. The principal results indicate that deaths attributable to overweight in Argentina were 5.6% in men and 5.3% in women, while in Chile these percentages were 8.9% in men and 10.2% in women. The total YLEL from causes related to overweight and obesity and other causes in men in Chile was 0.74 years, while in women in Chile it was 0.52 years. In men in Argentina, the YLEL attributable to excess adiposity was 0.6 years, while in women it was 0.38 years. Keywords: Mortality, Obesity, Chronic diseases, Life Expectancy.
