Abstract Migratory movements are one of themost important demographic phenomenain American history but especiallyin Argentina, being of great importanceboth quantitatively and qualitatively. The aim of this paper is to analyzethe characteristics and trends of migration in the Northwest. In our quest to answer thequestion posed in the title of this paper, we conducta review of sources that describemigration in the region of NOA from different angles, moments and disciplines. Drawing on all these contributions analyze the volume and composition of immigration, taking into account the origin of it andits economic and cultural characteristics. Structure on which to develop a descriptive statistical analysis of migration trends in the region. To develop the work is used as the main source National Census of Populationand Housing 2001 and 2010, making a quantitative examination of the phenomenon to be described statistically. This will attempt to explain migration in northwest Argentina, hoping to get next result establish demographic matricesproduced as a result of endogenous and exogenous factors of this shift.
