Health related quality of ife in obese, overweight and no overweight children from public schools of Cordoba city (Argentina)

Background and objectives: The prevalence of childhoodobesity have steadily increased since more than four decades.Measures of health related quality of life (HRQoL) may contributeto know the impact of overweight on physical, social, and emotionalwell-being. Objective: to know the HRQoL in children accordingto their condition of excess weight.Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted in a representativesample of 1577 children attending Municipal primary schoolsin the city of Cordoba, Argentina, in 2011. Children completedthe KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire measuring 10 dimensions ofHQRoL. Body weight and height were measured to calculate BMIand to categorize excess weight according to IOTF and WHO definitions.Associations between variables were assessed using ANOVA,adopted 5% as the significance level. Between-group differenceswere assessed using Cohen?s ??d?? as a measure of effect size(ES). ES of 0.2?0.5 were considered small, those between 0.51 and0.8 moderate, and those over 0.8 were considered large.Results: The prevalence of obesity was 11.1% using the IOTFdefinition and 16.5% using the WHO definition.
