Resumen:
This paper offers an overview of the history and development of historical archaeology in South America, from its beginnings to the present.  In order to accomplish this objective, we discuss its origins, theoretical frameworks, and subjects of investigation.  Historical archaeology in South America has experienced an accelerated growth since the mid-1980s.  Taking these circumstances into account, we analyze some of the most outstanding projects headed by South American archaeologists during the last decades
