Resumen:
Over the past two decades, political and economic exchanges between China and Latin American countries have increased steadfastly, which is exemplified by the recent finalisation of the Sino-Chile free trade agreement and the establishment of a ?strategic partnership? first between Brazil and China, then Argentina and China. In this lecture and against these new developments, I would like to present some of the preliminary findings drawn from a comparative study of the political institutions in China and Latin America from a sociological perspective. The central questions to be addressed in my talk will be: what particular geopolitical factors have contributed to this new wave of Orientalism in the Latin American context and how this renewed interest towards China would likely affect the ?left-populist? governments in South America?
