Abstract Nanostructured Sm2O3 hollow microspheres were prepared by a co-precipitation process in presence of formic acid. The use of pectin in aqueous solution decreased the particle fragmentation and the formation agglomerates. The calcination at 600 ºC in air produced single-phase Sm2O3. Nanostructured hollow microspheres were observed by FESEM. The size of microspheres was in the range 0.8 mm to 5 mm. The effect of calcination temperature on the formation of nanostructured and nanoporous microspheres was also studied. The CO and O2 gas sensing characterization was determined measuring its impedance. The films were prepared by a simple deposition method using the as-prepared Sm2O3 microspheres. Reproducibility in the detection of gases was observed at 500 °C, having an n-type semiconductor.
