Resumen:
Ever since its beginnings, the archaeological research project at Cholila (Chubut, Argentina) has been carrying out a geoarchaeological approach in diverse temporal and spatial scales. At this preliminary stage of the research, the contribution of geoarchaeology focuses on: a) The use of geomorphological criteria to define spatial sample units for taphonomic and artifact distribution studies; b) The assessment of weathering degree on painted rock walls; c) The incidence of geological and geomorphological processes on archaeological visibility. Preliminary results show specific loci with high artifact density, and large areas between them with low density, due to a very low archaeological visibility, caused by a very dense vegetation cover and high-magnitude burying processes. This is supported by the observation that surface sites with the highest artifact densities are located in areas with a high degree of erosion; otherwise, it is only sites with rock art, which are easily perceived, that are found. Finally, differential weathering was observed in the latter, according to the kind of rock wall.
