Bio-based substances from urban waste for solar photo-Fenton treatment: degradation of Emerging Pollutants

The effect of soluble bio-based organic substances (SBO) isolated from urban wastes on solar photo-Fenton treatments was investigated using a mixture of six emerging pollutants (EPs), namely acetaminophen, acetamiprid, carbamazepine, amoxicillin, caffeine and clofibric acid. Experiments were performed at pilot plant scale under sunlight irradiation at different initial pHs with and without SBO. The results showed that in acidic conditions (pH 2.8) the effect of SBO was negative, whereas at slightly acidic conditions (pH = 5.2), SBO were able to enhance photo-Fenton treatment most probably by increasing iron availability.
