Resumen:
In this work, we analyze the effect of Digital Elevation Model (DEM) resolution in the delimitation of volcanic edifices. We profit of NETVOLC, a semi-automated tool capable of delimiting volcanic edifices with limited user intervention, that has been extensively applied using DEMs of both medium (SRTM 90 m DEM) and high (NED 10 m DEM) resolutions. Here, we process a set of small to medium size volcanoes of the Michoacan-Guanajuato volcanic field (Mexico), using the TanDEM-X DEMs of 12, 30 and 90 m spatial resolutions. Obtained results suggest that volcanic edifices with diameters less than 1 km are successfully defined only using the 12 m resolution DEM, whereas volcanoes larger than 1 km are delimited successfully with all three resolution DEMs, although better detail is obtained with the 12 and 30 m DEMs. However, increasing DEM spatial resolution means increasing the computation effort of volcanic edifice delimitation. Thus, new processing strategies are mandatory for computing complex cases when high resolution DEMs are employed.
