Resumen:
Andrimid, a known non-ribosomal pseudopeptideantibiotic, was isolated from a psychrotolerantSerratia proteamaculans strain. The antibiotic peptide wasproduced at low temperature (8 C) in a 7.5 l BIOFLO 101bioreactor under batch culture mode. Andrimid activityfrom S. proteamaculans culture was only detected at 25 Cand below and potent antibacterial activity was revealedagainst both, pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria.Minimal inhibitory concentration values determined bymicrodilution experiments varied in the range between 0.01and 0.78 lg/ml. Antimicrobial purification and structureelucidation were carried out by LC-MS/MS and 1H/13CNMR approaches. The effects on the ultrastructure ofsensitive Escherichia coli 35,218 cells were observed bytransmission electron microscopy at different inhibitionstages. This work demonstrated the significance of bioprospectionfrom cold environments through the screeningof microorganisms with ability to produce cold-activebiomolecules of biotechnological interest. S. proteamaculans136 was revealed as a novel microbial source forandrimid production at low temperatures, showing biotechnologicalpotential to be applied in cryopreservation, food or cosmetic industries against pathogenic bacteria.
