Resumen:
Nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite powder was synthesized from natural bovine andporcine bone by a milling method. The bone had been deproteinized by two different methodsbefore it was calcined to different temperatures (800 and 1100oC). The resulting product wasmilled to obtain a nanometric material. Characteristics of the powders were then investigated bydifferent evaluations such as determination of the particle size, composition and crystallinity ofthe material, and cytotoxic effect of hydroxyapatite. The particle size of this naturalhydroxyapatite varies between 100 nm and 100m. The X-ray diffraction showed that thecrystallinity degree and crystallite size progressively increased with the calcination temperature.Calcium and phosphorous were the main elements, the Ca/P ratio of this natural hydroxyapatitevaries between 1.11 and 2.79. Samples did not show cytotoxicity.IndexTerms?nanomaterials, hydroxyapatite, biocompatibility.
