Resumen:
In the middle of the nineteenth century, Robert Brown (1773?1858) was considered a scientific titan and dubbed Jupiter Botanicus, the greatest botanist of his time, with broad interests in plant science. Yet today, beyond Brownian Movement and the R.Br. after hundreds of plant-names, he and his ground-breaking work are little appreciated, largely because, on the one hand, his pioneering discoveries have become a familiar part of mainstream biology and, on the other, his work was to be sidelined by his botanical successors bent on pure systematics and inventory as part of the British imperial endeavour. This book is an attempt to draw together for the first time published materials on Brown's work with information contained in his unpublished manuscripts and associated specimens, predominantly those in the Natural History Museum London. In the first part, there is a sketch of his life, an eponymy, a list of his publications and an account of his scientific manuscripts in the Natural History Museum London. The second part is devoted to a catalogue of Brown's new taxa with types, modern disposition and supplementary notes.Of the total of 3584 of Brown's published names (18 orders, 56 families, 21 tribes and subfamilies, 440 genera, 33 sections or other infrageneric ranks, 2977 species and 39 infraspecific names), including 276 new combinations, i.e. 2 genera, 273 species and 1 variety, and 192 nomina nova, i.e. 1 bird, 7 fungi, 35 algae, 32 bryophytes, 116 pteridophytes (including fossil taxa), 21 gymnosperms and 3366 angiosperms, in current use are 1761 Brown names (4 orders, 36 families ? still recognized by APG IV, etc., 10 tribes and subfamilies, 297 genera, 5 sections or other infrageneric ranks, 1257 species (1100 of them Australian), besides 154 of his new combinations and nomina nova (57 of them Australian), while 700 are the basionyms of names in current use (7 families, 5 tribes and subfamilies, 7 genera, 8 sections or other infrageneric names, 668 species and 8 infraspecific names, 559 of them being Australian). The following new combinations and one nomen novum are proposed: Anthoxanthum racemosum (Trin.) Mabb. & Wajer, Calamagrostis oreophila Mabb., Cleistochloa uncinulata (R.Br.) Mabb. & D.T. Moore, Convolvulus naniflorus Mabb., Eucarpha deplanchei (Brongn. & Gris) P.H.Weston & Mabb., E. strobilina (Labill.) P.H.Weston & Mabb., [Lazarum brownii (Schott) M.D.Barrett], Leucadendron vinimontis Rebelo.Tribe Alsodeieae R.Br. ex DC. is an earlier name for Rinoreeae Reiche & Taub. (Violaceae), Carex concolor R.Br. for C. bigelowii Torr. ex Schwein., Cyperus uncinatus Poir. for C. cuspidatus Kunth (Cyperaceae), Dendrobium brownii F.Dietr. for D. discolor Lindl. (Orchidaceae), Diospyros microcarpa (Jacq.) Gürke for D. australis (R.Br.) F.M.Bailey (Ebenaceae) and Plantago brownii F.Dietr. for P. triantha Spreng. (Plantaginaceae). The correct name for Cyathea sollyana (Griff.) Fraser-Jenk. is Cyathea brunoniana (Hook.) Clarke & Baker while C. chinensis Copel. is restored for ?C. brunoniana? sensu Fraser-Jenk. & al. Veronica derwentia Andrews (Plantaginaceae) is the correct name for ?V. derwentiana?. Utricularia compressa R.Br. (Lentibulariaceae) is a new synonym of U. caerulea L. When Barteria Hook.f. is combined with Smeathmannia Sol. ex R.Br. (Passifloraceae), its species take the latter generic name.Lectotypes and neotypes are designated by colleagues as follows (Brown names unless otherwise stated): R.M Barker: Eranthemum variabile, Hakea adnata, H. baxteri, H. cristata, H. eriantha, H. florida, H. glabella, H. ilicifolia, H. lasiantha, H. microcarpa, H. nitida, H. prostrata, H. rugosa, H. suaveolens and H. varia; R.M. & W.R. Wilson & J.J. Bruhl: Carpha alpina; P.G. Wilson: Eucalyptus rugosa. It is shown that Brown?s General Remarks was a ?pre-issue? of his account in an appendix to Flinders?s Voyage ? (1814) and that some parts of Transactions of the Linnean Society of London were issued earlier than previously supposed. As the germane Ferdinand Bauer plates (with analysis) of Australian plants were issued before Brown?s Remarks, the following ?Brown? names are likely attributable to Bauer and/or even Francis Sansom, the engraver: Antiaris macrophylla, Eudesmia, E. ×tetragona, Eupomatia, E. laurina, Flindersia and F. australis.
