Karyotype differentiation between Koelreuteria bipinnata and K. elegans subsp. formosana (Sapindaceae) based on chromosome banding patterns.

Koelreuteria Laxm. belongs to the tribe Koelreuterieae (Sapindaceae), andincludes three tree species widely recognized due to horticultural merit. Thetwo more closely species of Koelreuteria, K. bipinnata Franch.and K. elegans (Seem.) A. C. Sm., are easily distinguished from K.paniculata Laxm. by its bipinnate leaves. In this study, both species werecytogenetically investigated, and their karyotypes and heterochromatic patternswere compared. Karyotypes of K. bipinnata, with 2n = 32 and K.elegans subsp. formosana (Hayata) F. G. Mey. with 2n = 32 presentslight morphological differences when observed by conventional staining.Banding patterns for the genus are reported for first time, being that bothspecies exhibited terminal heterochromatic blocks, revealed by C-Giemsa andC-CMA3. However, the bands size varied between the species. K.bipinnata presents larger heterochromatic blocks and more GC-rich segmentswhile in K. elegans subsp. formosana these bands were smaller.Discussion was performed according to the relationship between the karyotypefeatures in these closely related species.
