Resol type phenolic resin was synthesized with a formaldehyde/phenol molar ratio=1.3. A purified and two organically modified montmorillonites were used. The composites were obtained by adding 5% (wt/wt) of clay to the resol resin, sonicated and then, they were cured by temperature previous addition of sulphuric acid. Rheological properties of nanocomposites based on resol resin and different montmorillonites indicated that the better dispersion of the clay was reached with the addition of Cl30B and Cl10A. From the thermal analysis it was observed that the degradation is diminished by the addition of clays to the resol. In addition to the thermal analysis, the results from DMA and FTIR indicate that the composites with the modified montmorillonites showed a network with a lesser croslinking density. This could be due to the interaction between the modifiers and the resol because of the hidrophilicity and compatibility between the chemical groups of them.
