In this paper three characterization methods for
describing a complex hydrocarbon mixture are discussed. The merit of each characterization
procedure is evaluated through vapor-liquid equilibrium, phase separation and
volumetric calculation. The methods are evaluated using information from
literature for a twenty-component mixture. A commercial software was used to
determine the true boiling points of the mixture and the Soave-Redlich-Kwong
equation of state was used for vapor-liquid equilibirum calculations. In the
three methods, the mixture is separated into six pseudo-components. It is found
thaat the best characterization method is the one which directly uses the
true-boiling point curve to obtain the pseudo-components.
