Resumen:
We previously report the antimicrobial activity of the [Cu(phen)(cnge)(H2O)(NO3)2] complex (Cu/phen/cnge) against strains of Enterococcus, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, and Escherichia genus derived from the American Type Culture Collections (ATCC). The aim of the present work was to extend the antimicrobial evaluation of the Cu/phen/cnge complex, free and included in a pharmaceutical formulation. The results showed that the Cu/phen/cnge complex has antibacterial activity clinically relevant against both ATCC and clinical isolate strains. The film exerts halos against S. aureus ATCC 25923 and S. aureus ATCC 29213, and against the MRSA strains (S. aureus 5627 and S. aureus 5646). The release assay suggests 5% of release at 6 h and the data adjust at Peppas-Shalin kinetics. These results are relevant because S. aureus 5627 is resistant to methicillin, whereas S. aureus 5646 is resistant to methicillin, erythromycin, clindamycin, levofloxacin and gentamicin. In summary, coordination compounds could be alternative agents against the antimicrobial resistance.
