Resumen:
The results of archeological, palynological and sedimentological investigations allowed a reconstruction of the paleoecological development of the Río Yavi Basin (22º 13?S, 65º 22? W) during the preceramic stage. The investigation area is situated in the region between the Puna and the Cordillera Oriental mountain range. The preceramic stage includes both the lower and the middle Holocene, comprising three different periods of human settlement and development of landscape.   The period of 10,500-8100yr B.P. which was more humid compared to the present time and during which groups of hunters and gatherers lived. The period of 8100-6100yr B.P., wich was arid, steppes and highland pastures of the Puna type predominated, mainly eolic accumulation of fine grained sediments in the valleys occurred and archaeological evidence is scarce. The period of 6100-3500yr B.P., which was slightly more humid than the previous period, changes in the vegetation of riverbeds occurred as a consequence of increasing fluvial activity, at the same time there?s archaeological and palynological evidence of the rise of agriculture and cattle raising.
