Background: Galectin-1 (Gal-1) plays key roles in different physiologic and pathologic processes. Yersinia enterocolitica (Ye) cause enterocolitis and mesenteric lymphadenitis. The present study was aimed to elucidate the role of Gal-1 in the mucosal immune response against oral infection with Ye.Methods: C57BL/6 wild-type (WT) and Gal-1 knockout (Lgals1-/-) mice were intragastrically or intravenously infected with Ye WAP-314 serotype O:8. On days 3 after infection, mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN), Peyer´s patches (PP) and spleen were removed and colony forming units (CFU) and cellular infiltration were analyzed. Moreover, PP of WT and Lgals1-/- mice were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy.Results: After oral infection, CFU number was significantly lower in PP and MLN of infected Lgals1-/- compared to WT mice (p
