Resumen:
The application of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) in gas phase heterogeneous catalysis continues to be scarce due to the stability limitations of these materials under reaction conditions. In the present work we characterized by spectroscopy a Zr-MOF that we have recently functionalized by sulfation (S-Zr-MOF), and that had shown a remarkable increase of acidity with respect to theuntreated MOF. By EDS it was observed that the structure of the MOF retains sulfur species that remain after thermal treatments of the material. Through FTIR, an anchorage of sulfate-type species was verified that interact with the inorganic node of the MOF. The latter was also verified by UV-VIS DRS which show that these species do not modify the organic ligand of the MOF. In addition, XPSconfirmed a strong electronic interaction of the sulfate groups with the zirconium cluster, which results in a lower electron density on some zirconium atoms in the framework. This study allows to advance in the knowledge of the species in this modified Zr-MOF, concluding that there is a synergy between anchored sulfate-type species and the inorganic environment of the MOF, which isresponsible for the strong acidity of this new nanomaterial.
