XRD patterns of the clay filled foams showed an intercalated structure of the clay. A small amount of stacking of clay layers with slightly layer separation is visible by TEM images. This confirms the XRD results indicating that polymer is slightly intercalated in particular for the sample with 5% of clay (PUF5). The density, modulus, compressive strength and average cell size were determined for the different samples. It is well know that mechanical properties of cellular materials depend on the density. It was observed that the density and cell size values do not change with the clay content. This would confirm that the clay does not act as nucleating agent of foaming process. In these conditions (similar density for the different samples) the mechanical properties will depend only of content and degree of dispersion of clay in the polyurethane matrix. On the other hand, it was obtained an enhancement in the mechanical properties for the PUF5 sample. This behavior is in agreement with the better degree of dispersion of clay in the polyurethane matrix and confirmed by TEM.
