Resumen:
The exploration of renewable feedstocks to prepare new generation of waterborne coatings with low carbon footprint and environmental impact is imperative for both academics and industries. The present chapter aimed at concisely demostrating the technological feasibility of producing high-value materials using renewable resources. Herein the independent use of a natural polymer and a monosaccharide to produce waterborne latexes for coating applications was shown to be promising, emphasizing an effective progress towards sustainability. In the case of employing casein as a natural protein, the recent advances in the design and preparation of acrylic/casein latexes have opened new possibilities for the industrial application of these biobased materials in the field of waterborne coatings. On the other hand, latest developments allow the selective extraction of carbohydrates, essentially monosaccharides, from food waste such as fruit peels, nutshell, and eventually putrefied fruits and vegetables. From this monosaccharides, promising monomers could be synthesized which emerged as alternatives to conventional acrylate ones, extensively used in industrial production of waterborne coatings.
