Application of semiconductor photocatalysis for the oxidation of many organic chemical pollutants in water has been extensively studied in the last decades. More recently, photocatalytic technologies have been also applied to the inactivation of microorganisms with disinfection purposes. These processes have the advantage of avoiding the formation of carcinogenic and mutagenic chloro-organic disinfection by products derived from conventional chlorination processes.
