Resumen:
We present a high-level assessment of the potential for CO2 geological storage of two Argentinian sedimentary basins, the Neuquén and Golfo San Jorge basins. Applying a few elimination criteria, suitable areas for CO2 storage were identified in several geological units in both basins. The analysis was then restricted to the areas of oil and gas fields in each unit, yielding approximately 200 prospects per basin. We selected a series of criteria to evaluate each prospect, such as the petrophysical parameters and estimated CO2 storage capacity of the reservoir and the characteristics of the containment system. We used exploratory level data gathered mostly from published works. Finally, we assigned a relative weight to each criterium and applied a multi-criteria decision method to rank the prospects. Our results show that, at the current level of analysis, the Centenario Formation in the Neuquén Basin and the Cañadón Seco Formation (and equivalents) in the Golfo San Jorge Basin, display the most promising characteristics. We expect the results of this work can serve as the starting point for a more comprehensive and detailed assessment of their potential as geological sinks of CO2.
