The paper describes the retrofitting of the public lighting in a residential area involving the participation of the Neighbors, the University and the Municipality. The project was developed under the influence of the crisis which exploded in Argentina at the end of 2001. The violence on streets and the lack of security, specially during night time strongly affects the people demands about public lighting. The existance of dense foliages added demands of lighting on footpaths. The aim of this work was to consider peoples opinion, to increase lighting levels and uniformities on streets and footpaths, reduction of electric energy consumption, integration of the lighting system with the vegetation, control of light pollution. Neighbors assessments and photometric surveys before and after the retrofitting and the interaction with the Municipality are discussed.
