Resumen:
The Carboniferous-Permian siliciclastic section, tha extendí from Southern Peru, trough Bolivia to Northern Argentina, conforms the intracratonic tarija Basin. These sedimentary deposits have been assigned tho the Macharetí and Mandiyutí Groups. The upper section of the latter corresponds to the San Telmo Formation (White, 1923). This paper presents the results of stratigraphic-sedimentologic study of the San Telmo Formation outcrops at the Caraparí river, in the Caraparí river, north Salta province. A late Carboniferous to early Permian age was assigned to the San Telmo Formation (Salfity et al, 1987) based on stratigraphic relationships and fossil record (Azcuy and Laffite, 1981: di Pascuo and Azcuy, 1997). At the Caraparí river, the San Telmo Formations is comprised of 425 meters of sandstones interbedded with wackes ands mudstones. Sedimetary body architecture, facies and associations were defined in orden ti interpret depositional environments. Fluvial, lacustrine and glacial environments were identified in San Telmo Formation. Finally, three depositional cicles were recognized based on abrupt changes in sedimetary conditions and contact surfaces.
