Resumen:
The performance of a bubble column as a gas-liquid contacting device for the production of resols is shown. Agaseous mixture of formaldehyde and nitrogen was bubbled in an alkaline phenol solution held at 80 OC. Theformaldehyde absorption rate was controlled by mass transfer in the gas phase. The volumetric mass transfercoefficient was satisfactorily predicted wlth equations describing transient diffusion in spherical geometry. Valuesof holdup and Sauter mean bubble diameter are reported as a function of the superficial gas velocity. Severalcharacteristics of the resulting resols were analyzed using chemical, IR, DSC, and viscosimetric techniques. Theprocess showed several advantages when compared with the usual batch process.
