Intraspecificandinterspecificvariationincervical,thoracic,andlumbarregionofthevertebralcolumnof
Dasypodidaewereexaminedinaphylogeneticframework.Thenumberofvertebraeforeachregionwererecordedfor
86 specimensandmetricdataforeachvertebra(centrumlength,high,andwidth)wererecordedfor72specimens,
includingeightoftheninelivinggenera.Thenumberofvertebraeanddegreeoffusionbetweenthemwereusedto
definefourcharacterswhichwereplottedontwoalternativephylogeniesofDasypodidae.Theratiobetweencentrum
height andwidthissimilaracrossalltaxaanalyzedexceptfor Chlamyphorus, whichexhibitsadeviationinthelasttwo
lumbars. Tolypeutesmatacus is uniqueamongthetaxaexaminedinhavingasecondco-osifiedbonecalledpostcervical
bone,whichisafusionoftheseventhcervicalandfirstthoracicvertebrae.Thethoraco-lumbarnumbersofdasypodids
are reducedwhencomparedwithotherxenarthransandaremorediversethanthoseofsomeothermammalianclades
of similargeologicalageandhigherecomorphologicaldiversity.Changesinsizearesomewhatcoupledwithchangesin
the numberofbodysegments.Independentofthephylogeneticframeworktaken,changesinsizeareaccompanied
with smallchangesinnumbersofthoracolumbarvertebraewithineachgenus.Therearefunctionalandphylogenetic
correlatesforchangesinnumberofthoraco-lumbarvertebraeindasypodids.
