Resumen:
In theframework of the challenges impossed by climate change to forestry productionand to natural forests worldwide, the objective of this simposium is to presentthe current knowlegde about how trees in particular, and woody species ingeneral, deal with water deficit, analysing response mechanisms at differentorganization levels: from the whole plant to tissues and cells. Different keytraits ?and novel methodological approaches to measure them- associated todrought stress tolerance or avoidance will be presented with emphasis in theirintraspecific variability. This within-species variation is the basis fornatural and artificial selection but it is still a subject poorly known. Inaddition,  achievements and challenges of newphenotyping methods will be discussed in order to implement this knowledge intothe selection of genotypes with a high adaptability to drought stress in treebreeding or conservation programs.
