Resumen:
Cytokeratins are a complex of intermediate filaments thatare cytoskeletal differentiation-related proteins detectedin virtually all eukaryotic cells. The exposure of ruminantsto diethylstilbestrol leads to hyperplasia and squ amousmetaplasia of the prostatic glandular basal cells, increasing the anticytokeratin reactivity in those cells.Formaldehyde is the most common fixative employed indiagnostic pathology laboratories. Because of its timedependen!polypeptides cross-linking action , however, formaldehyde can mask many antigens and thus interferewith most immunohistochemical studies. Recently, heatbasedphysical methods (microwave, autoclave, pressurecooker) have been shown to improve immunohistochemistryon routine formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded ti ssues. Here we present evidence of the use of ultrasoundas a new epitope retrieval method that has been shownquantitatively and statistically to be more effective in detectingprostatic basal cell structural cytokeratines comparedwith the other retrjeval methods.
