Resumen:
Intoxication with Solanum bonariense leads to cerebellar histological lesions including Purkinje cell vacuolation, degeneration and progressive cells death. Calbindin D 28k (CbD28k) is highly expressed in Purkinje cells, and used as a specific marker of Purkinje neurons in cerebellar degenerations. The goal of the present work was to analyse the CbD28k expression in Solanum bonariense intoxicated bovines in Uruguay. Different dose and times of intoxication with the poisonous plant have shown that even though there is a decrease in the number of Purkinje cells in all the studied areas, the specificity and intensity of CbD28k did not change in comparison to normal tissues. Moreover, TUNEL tests and electron microscopy have determined that death of affected cells is not occurring via an apoptotic process.
