We studied the effects of the planting date on the incidence and yield reduction of the corn stunt spiroplasm (CSS). The density of the vector (Dalbulus maidis) was highest in the late seedings and, during the first developmental stages (emergence-V4) the number of insect/plant registered doubled the registered in the normal planting data.  In general, the incidence of CSS was highest in late cultivations, but not all the evaluated germoplasm had a similar behavior.  The analysis of yield looses established that a CSS infected plant produced a mean of 40 to  90% less than a healthy one and the size of the grains was smaller.
