Resumen:
Both, Corn stunt spiroplasm (Spiroplasma kunkelii Whitcomb) (CSS) occurrence in the Argentinean Northwest, and the lack of information about their effects on corn production took to carry out this yield looses quantification caused by the disease in Tucumán province. The pathogen presence was evaluated through visual observation of the typical symptoms and by means of NC-ELISA technique. The presence of the CSS in 8 localities was established, with serologic levels of incidence ranging between 12 to 62%, and indicating their wide diffusion in Tucumán province. The disease reduce a  mean of 70% of the total production, ranging between 50-90% in function of the intensity of the serologic reaction; in severely affected plants the production can be null. These preliminary results show that the CSS is a restrictive factor for corn production, and establishes the necessity to carry out studies to minimize the harmful effects caused by the disease.
