Resumen:
The hydrogenolysis of erythritol (C4H10O4)to selective produce butanediols (BDO) which are widely used in the polymer andsynthetic rubber industry was studied. The reaction requires the presence ofbimetallic catalysts in which there is a synergy between a hydrogenolytic metaland a oxophilic metal oxide that promotes the formation of the desiredproducts. In this work, the effect of the support on the catalytic activity andselectivity to BDO was specifically studied using bimetallic Ir and Recatalysts supported on solids of different nature: SiO2, Al2O3,activated carbon, CeO2, TiO2 and ZrO2. Thecatalysts were characterized by numerous techniques, finding that thephysicochemical, redox and acidity properties of the supports had a significantinfluence on the metallic dispersion, reducibility of the species and particlesizes. The most active and selective catalyst towards the formation of BDO wasIrRe/TiO2, with a maximum BDO yield of 53% after 24h of reaction at200°C and 25 bar of H2, which was attributed to the intimate contactbetween Ir and Re on this support, the presence of Ir mostly in its metallicstate and partially oxidized Re species (mainly Re+IV) that favorthe C-O bond scissions.
