Resumen:
Our former studies in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) showed markedly decreased plasma levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) together with augmented concentrations of cortisol and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Pleural TB patients (PLTB) that mount a better anti-mycobacterial immune response revealed even further increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduced cortisol and DHEA concentrations in their pleural fluids (PF) compared their peripheral compartment. Given the well known immunomodulatory effects of galectins (Gal) which may impact on the endocrine response as well, we also measured concentrations of Gal-1 and Gal-3 (ELISA) in PF and plasma (P) from PLTB patients (n=11), and P from PTB (n=38) cases with no pleural affectation and healthy controls (HCo; n=24).
