Resumen:
Objective(s) Unlike other clinical forms of the disease, pleural tuberculosis (PLTB) is associated with a robust cell-mediated immune response that may help to understand immune and endocrine processes likely to play a role in the protective response. Hence, the immune-endocrine profile (IL-1b, IL-6, CRP, IFNg, TGFβ, cortisol, DHEA, DHEAS, GH-ELISA-), mRNA expression (qRT-PCR) of the glucocorticoid receptor isoforms (GRα and β) and enzymes regulating cortisol availability, 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11βHSD) type 1 and 2, were evaluated. Material and Methods Pleural fluid and blood mononuclear cells (MC) from 12 newly diagnosed patients with PLTB and peripheral samples from patients with only pulmonary TB (PTB,n=28) and 19 healthy controls were included. Results While both groups of patients had increased plasma concentrations of all immunological mediators, IL-6, IFNγ and CRP levels were more augmented in those with PLTB (p
