Resumen:
Pleural tuberculosis (PLTB) constitutes a natural model for assessing the protective immune response at the site of infection, and its relationship with the endocrine response. To ascertain whether patients with PLTB and PTB display a similar profile of immune and endocrine responses, plasma (P) levels of immunological mediators (IFNgamma, IL-6, IL-1β, CRP and TGFβ ?ELISAs-) and hormones (Cortisol, DHEA, DHEAS, GH -ELISA-) of patients with TBP were compared to those of PLTB in whom samples from pleural fluids (F) were also available. Plasma concentrations of all immunological mediators were significantly increased in both patient groups respect healthy controls (HCo), with IL-6, IFNgama and CRP values being even higher PLTB cases. In PLTB patients, F cytokine levels were higher than P counterparts, except for TGFβ that showed an opposite pattern. Compared to HCo, both types of TB patients showed a similar profile, consisting of markedly increased amounts of cortisol (p
